Philosophy is.... love of Sophy, Wisdom, ancient but forever young. To master any liberal art is to master and be mastered by (enraptured, inspired) an immortal woman, one of Mnemosyne’s daughters, a muse, or by one of the graces. How then is it for a woman? Adrienne Rich dives to the wreck of English literature, masters it or is mastered by it, and returns as a he, now the voice of the tradition, having made it her own, having been made its own by a tradition, heritage, patrimony, legacy of love. This is earthly immortality not of the individual talent only but of a tradition that gives us life.
So Tutor, standing stiff and stern, gesticulating magisterially with his forefinger, speaks to Audrey, or her back, as she ignores him, building a tall, tall, tower of blocks, taller than she is. As it falls she says, “Will you shut up,Tutor! Look what you made me do. I hate stupid literature and I hate you too.” To himself only, chastened, he murmurs, "Only love does you justice, kid, for what lives in you and through you, the tradition that gives us life."
"And what tradition is that?," you might ask, Gentle Reader. To make sure you get the right answer, I consulted my respected colleague in Wealth Bondage, our Senior Adjunct in Charge of Hidden Meaning and of English as a Second Language, Dr. Amrit Chadwallah. He said, "Phil, what we have here is a paradigmatic case of the Carnivalesque, whose Goddess is Dame Folly. That, as you well know, is the tradition that gives us life, her at Gifthub, that lives in us and through us, and is our Ground of Being, held in mind by the Author Function Himself.....Some say he is a genius of the highest order, sequestered here within Wealth Bondage, disguised as Professor of Philanthropy, which means what? Which means love of what? Love of all humankind! Others say, No, he, the Author Function, is a She, an attorney, or CPA, a Banker, who is a talented amateur dabbling in writing literature while planning legacies for families like Audrey's. Amateur, yes, from amo! Which means what, Phil?" I have no idea what he is talking about. But I have no one to interpret his interpretation but Chadwallah himself, and that might lead to a spiral into which all meaning would disappear as if flushed from Wealth Bondage, considered as a serious business, and the Brand of All Brands, or as 'how we live now,' into another vaster, inchoate, realm, a great underground river from which and to which our tradition endlessly tends.
